Creating a Lasting Smile
A bridge is a natural-looking, permanent dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. Simply put, it "bridges" the space between two teeth to restore your smile and oral health.
The bridge is firmly held into place by your teeth on each side of the empty space, or by dental implants. Keep in mind that dental bridges are permanent and cannot be removed.
Left unfilled, spaces left by missing teeth can cause the surrounding teeth to shift out of their natural position. This can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease, and may even result in further tooth loss.
Do you have missing teeth? A dental bridge can help restore the appearance of your smile, as well as your ability to chew and speak properly. Your bridge will be customized by your dentist to match the colour of your natural teeth.
The Bridge Procedure
If you require a dental bridge, you can typically expect two dental appointments. First, your dentist will clean and re-contour the teeth on either side of the gap. Impressions will then be taken and sent to a lab where your bridge will be made.
Once it's ready, your dentist will permanently bond the bridge to your existing natural teeth, or to implants or crowns that have been placed for this purpose.
How to Care for Your Bridge
Like your natural teeth, dental bridges should be brushed twice a day and flossed at least once every day. Your dentist can demonstrate how to properly use a floss threader to floss under and around the artificial teeth in the middle of the bridge.
By thoroughly brushing, flossing, and taking good care of your dental bridge, they typically last for about 10 years.
